We live in a beautiful world, but there is a lot of work to do to reverse the damage that has been done. Not ones for being negative, we are always keen to get to work to redress the balance.
On this page you'll find all the campaigns and projects we are currently working on, with details of how you can get involved.
The Growing Wild for Nature project is centred around helping young people to reconnect with the natural world. We are partnering with Sussex Past to deliver this initiative, with Michelham Priory acting as our hub. We'll be accepting applications from schools later in the year. Since our inception, Garden Guardians has been very involved with the community. We have hosted talks and workshops and attended many different events, meaning we have spent a lot of time speaking with people about their worries about environmental issues.
Many people expressed concerns about the younger generations not having the same connection with the natural world that perhaps older generations had. With many contributary factors, not least of all tangibly less nature and wildlife to interact with, we saw a real need to help children forge a connection with the natural world.
Another key area that was very prominent was the inequity in who could access green spaces. It was important to us that we made anything we did accessible and inclusive. As such, all our events have been free.
We are very grateful to have been awarded a grant from the wonderful Chalk Cliff Trust, which has enabled us to move to the next phase of the project.
We run two types of events - those that take place in the school holidays for anyone to attend, and those that take place during term-time for schools to book into. We are currently putting together the final details for the trial events which will take place in April 2025. We will be opening applications for the school bookings later in the year. Please register your interest if you think your school might want to participate.
We always welcome volunteers - if you think you might want to help out with the sessions, please do get in touch, we'd love to hear from you! Roles vary greatly and even if you can only dedicate a little time, we greatly appreciate everyone who helps.
Our events incorporate many different elements and we are always looking for new and exciting ways to share the message. If you are an educator, have creative talents, or if you are simply someone passionate about helping the natural world, we'd really welcome your ideas.
The project will roll out formally in the summer, with the holiday programme starting around July time. Full details will be released around May time. Sign up to be the first to hear!
We are very fortunate to be partnering with The Sussex Archeological Society (Sussex Past) in delivering this project and will be using one of their beautiful sites - Michelham Priory in Hailsham, East Sussex - as our main base.
The Growing Wild For Nature events will feature immersive learning with each of the activities designed to educate, empower and inspire. We will have arts and crafts, quizzes and games, song and storytelling and mindfulness elements - all helping to connect the participants with the beauty and wonder of the natural world.
The term time events will be open for schools to apply for once the trial events have taken place. They are offered completely free, with the entrance fee to Michelham Priory covered as part of the project. There may even be funding for assistance with transport costs to and from the site - this will be awarded on a case by case basis.
Each session will run for around 3 hours, covering a wide range of topics, with each activity being interactive and engaging. Each class will leave with a 'nature kit' containing a mini-vegetable garden, wildflower seeds and certificate of attendance, enabling the children to put practical use to their learning. The class will agree to host an assembly for the rest of the school to share what they have learnt, and from this, a 'nature pledge' will be put together, detailing steps the school can take to help nature on their grounds and the local area.
To mark their participation in the project and by way of a thank you for being involved, each school will be awarded one or more trees with a commemorative plaque, to be planted on school grounds. These are being kindly donated by the Woodland Trust and will be delivered later in the year. An event will be held at Michelham Priory for collection of the trees. This will be a wonderful way of celebrating the community working together to help protect and preserve the natural world.
The school holiday events will be less structured and will be open for everyone to attend.
Dates for all the events will be released very soon - sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date with the news.
We want to help as many people reconnect with the natural world as possible. Our founding principles are to empower, educate and inspire - by reigniting the innate love for nature we believe we are all born with creates new custodians of the environment through the desire to protect that which we love.
Our vision is to help form a supportive network of people, all working towards the same aim.
Ultimately, we want to live in a world where we don't have to protect the environment because we have relearnt to live gently & respectfully, in a way that doesn't destroy. This may not be something we can achieve overnight, or indeed in our lifetime, but we do fervently believe it is not only possible, but it is our evolution and the way we will live joyfully on this beautiful planet.
As you will know, it is one of the baselines to being a Garden Guardian that you pledge not to use any kind of toxin in the garden. Herbicides, pesticides and poisons are devastating for the natural world and our aim is to eradicate the use of these destructive chemicals.
The 'Kill The Poisons' campaign focuses specifically on rodenticide and is asking people to go to their local supermarkets, DIY stores and Garden Centres - anywhere that stocks it - with letters requesting that this cruel and indiscriminate toxin is removed from public sale.
See below for a template letter that you can use, but do feel free to put it in your own words.
